Continental’s ‘Transparent Hood’ wins innovation award

Continental’s ‘Transparent Hood’ system has won a CES 2020 Innovation Award in the Vehicle Intelligence and Transportation category. The system generates an image of the ground beneath the front of the vehicle, giving the impression that the hood is transparent. The image helps drivers navigate high curbs, potholes and rough terrain. ‘Transparent Hood’, the first system of its kind, is expected to help reduce vehicle damage incurred when parking.

Cameras are becoming standard on new vehicle models, to assist parking and other ADAS tasks, and in future, autonomous driving. ‘Transparent Hood’ system showcases the capability of intelligent, vehicle-integrated camera technology, which has the potential to improve safety and advance autonomous-driving functions.

‘Transparent Hood’ relies on Continental’s Surround View system, consisting of four cameras under the front and back grilles and both side mirrors; an algorithm constructs the image of the terrain under the vehicle. When the vehicle drives slowly, for example when parking or off-roading, the on-board screen shows the terrain underneath, assisting the driver in navigating the vehicle.

Continental’s ‘Transparent Hood’ technology will be on display at CES 2020, from 7 to 10 January 2020 in Las Vegas. The system is already used in mass production: from late 2018, it has been integrated in the standard equipment of a European-brand SUV.
