Fleet telematics: unlocking efficiency and insight for connected cars in Andean countries and beyond
The telematics solution consists of both hardware and software. As for the hardware, a device is installed in the car; this device collects and transmits datapoints to a server. Examples are: geo-localisation, mileage, fuel consumption, breakdowns and driver behaviour information. In order to provide a full “fleet management” picture, these data points need to be associated with other data sources, e.g., leasing companies, mapping providers, fuel or electricity providers, credit cards, motorway, regulatory bodies…
Some companies that provide telematics services are focused on developing technology for connected cars, while others specialize in data integration and fleet management. Some companies may have a particular focus, such as theft/insurance or fuel control. As a result, it can be challenging to compare telematics providers. However, there is a significant amount of cooperation among providers to meet the needs of fleet management.
In Andean countries, such as Colombia, Peru, and Chile, the use of connected cars in fleets is prevalent, with most fleets being fully equipped. According to Ricardo de Bolle from Arval and Sergio Lecue from ALD, who are both sales directors for the continent, 'fleet equipment prevalence rates range from 95%-100% in Colombia, 90%-95% in Peru, and 70% in Chile. However, in Mexico and Brazil, the adoption rates are much lower, ranging from 5%-15%. Argentina falls some-where in between with 30% of corporate cars being equipped with telematics technology.
