DHL rolls out electric delivery vans in US

Global courier company DHL will add electric delivery vans to its fleet in two urban US markets starting in spring 2020. Full deployment should follow in 2022 and 2023.

The announcement was made by Ulrich Stuhec, Chief Technology Officer, StreetScooter, the company that will deliver the electric vans.

StreetScooter was acquired by DHL in 2014. The subsidiary, which is yet to turn a profit, has already delivered electric vans for use in several German cities, in Amsterdam and in Vienna. To date, roughly 10,000 of the 12,000 StreetScooter electric vehicles on the road are painted in DHL livery.

DHL competitor UPS has already taken delivery of 1,000 electric and hybrid vehicles and FedEx has announced it will add 1,000 electric delivery vans to its fleet in California.

Amazon, meanwhile, announced an order of no fewer than 10,000 electric delivery vans from the EV start-up Rivian. However, the first commercially available Rivian vehicle is still to be unveiled.
