Uber not criminally liable for Arizona self-driving crash

Prosecutors said Uber is not criminally liable for the crash that occurred in March 2018, in which a self-driving Uber vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian.

The safety driver, Rafael Vasquez, will however face additional investigation as he did not intervene to prevent the crash. Police said last year that Mr Vasquez was watching a television show on a smartphone and that the crash was entirely avoidable.

The National Transportation Safety Board and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are still investigating the fatal crash.

After the crash, Uber suspended its trials with self-driving vehicles. In December 2018, however, the company resumed trials but with a more stringent procedure in place. Self-driving vehicles now have two safety monitors and the AV software has also been updated.
